The two most important things you need to know about Klavier Gavin are his two jobs. It might not be an aspect of his personality, per se, but both of his jobs are very closely tied to who he is as a whole. This is entirely because he kicked off his simultaneous dual career at a very young age -- his band's first album went platinum overnight and his prosecuting career started not too long after. This ensured Klavier's teenage years were a little more than busy. It's unknown when he started law school, but he spent two years studying abroad in Germany, whereupon he passed the bar and obtained his prosecutor's badge. He prosecuted his first case back in the States at the age of seventeen. Klavier has been lauded as genius and a prodigy, known as a "true thoroughbred of prosecutor's office".Flavor Abilities:
In between tours, Klavier continued his prosecuting career. He claims that his "real passion" is for law above his music and, unlike the other prosecutors in the Ace Attorney games who are the antagonist, he is not interested in achieving a perfect record or gaining every single defendant a "guilty" verdict. What he cares about, above anything else, is finding the truth in a trial and ensuring he gets the correct verdict.
This idealism was instilled into him by his mentor, Constance Courte. Although she was the department head for the Judge course in this trade school specific to defense attorneys, prosecutors and judges, Klaver did take to her teachings of truth and justice like a duck to water. She taught him that the only time when the ends justifies the means is when the means are proper. She never tolerated dishonesty and it was because of her that he aspired to seek out the truth before all other things.
Once we understand this, Klavier's actions in the game become clear. In court, the defense attorney Apollo Justice, is a brand new attorney -- Klavier's first case with him is Apollo's second case ever. But Apollo has very strong ideals about perusing the truth and, as such, Klavier will push him hard into presenting supporting evidence for his arguments as well as gently steering him towards the truth. Klavier will even call out lies from the witnesses testimony before Apollo has a chance to cross examine the witnesses, and he'll raise objections, even at the risk of losing his case.
This is also why, at age seventeen and prosecuting his very first case, when he's told from (what he thinks is) a reliable source that renowned defense attorney Phoenix Wright is planning on presenting forged evidence, he does what is right. He lies in wait for the supposed "forged evidence" to be presented and, the very minute it does, he brings it to immediate attention of the judge who, in turn, revokes Wright's badge.
Even though this action seems extreme, Klavier's kindness still shines through. Before Wright can present the forged evidence, Klavier warns him, tells him to reconsider his options before he can embarrass himself. But when Wright presents the forgery anyways, Klavier calls a private audience with the judge. He doesn't give proof that Wright's evidence is fake before the entire trial audience -- no, he does so with only the judge, Wright himself, and the one who made the forgery.
But this is not the only instance wherein Klavier is kind. He always stops to talk to his fans when he comes across them in the street and, in his introduction to the game, he helps Apollo access the crime scene the police were denying him access. The way he helps find the right verdict in court could also be seen as kindness. There's one instance where he and Apollo have a chance to share information and evidence with each other before the next day in court. Instead of deciding to keep it all to himself and surprising Apollo with it in court, he freely gives it up. However, when Apollo offers up what information he has Klavier labels him as "naive". Although, this might a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
Klavier's naivety is shown through in how he trusts people -- and he trusts entirely too easy. He trusts Apollo to be who he is, to find the truth, to ensure that proper justice is handed down. He trusts that Apollo won't take the information that Klavier is freely giving him to make a water tight case to let a killer walk free. Which, honestly? Is a lot of trust to put on someone you've only had a handful of conversations with. Especially when the majority of those conversations have taken place in court, on the proverbial battlefield.
Klavier's second job is being a rock star. And I don't mean that as an endearing adjective. I mean that Klavier Gavin is literally a rock star. As mentioned previously, his band, the Gavinners, went platinum overnight when Klavier was seventeen. He became a rock star before he passed the bar, before he prosecuted his first case.
Because of his status as a rock star, a lot of his mannerisms are rock star-esque. One of his sprites in the game is him rhythmically snapping his fingers to a beat that only can be heard in his head. Not to mention the one of him playing the air guitar for no reason.
The way he dresses is also influenced by his rock star persona. He has one ear pierced, he wears three silver rings, he uses a chain in place of a belt, and he has a necklace in the form of a stylized "G" that is his bands logo. He also dresses in purple and black, which are the colors of his band. Even -- Even the bottom of his shoes have the same stylized "G" that is his band's logo.
In short -- despite the words saying that he considers being a rock star "his hobby" compared to being a prosecutor, he does not go half way in being a rock star.
He also acts like a rock star. His best friend and second guitarist Daryan Crescend has often accused him of being a perfectionist and, well, he isn't wrong. During one notable concert, Klavier accuses Daryan of missing a cue while they were playing on stage. To the untrained ear, it was completely unnoticeable. It's only after Klavier takes a mixing board and replays the part with the missed cue several times over that it becomes noticeable in any way. And yet, he makes a point of confronting Daryan about it, saying that Daryan's uncaring attitude is "what lets killers walk free".
But his perfectionist tendencies aren't exclusive to being a rock star. Although it's not specifically stated in game, Klavier is noticeably more prepared than any other prosecutor in these games. He doesn't let evidence slip by him, no matter how small or unimportant the evidence might be. His cases are watertight, and the only thing that is able to sway him from his constructs of crime scenes is the truth.
Another thing Klavier has is charm. He has charm out the wazoo He is charming and flirtatious, and it's entirely more than enough to make the teeny boppers squeal. He has a smile that can light up a room and the kind of singular focus that can make someone feel like they are the only person in the world. He is suave and cool, not to mention a lyricist, so you know his pick up lines are going to be memorable, if nothing else.
When Trucy Wright first meets him, she assumes he's a prince.
However, his charm does not work on everyone. Ema Skye, the detective assigned to his cases, is particularly immune to his charms. Although he treats her like he treats everyone else, his rock star charm and attitude rubs her the wrong way, and she is constantly seen gripping about him, his actions, and calling him a "glimmerous fop".
But Klavier is not devastated by this lack of swooning -- he's certainly under no illusions about himself. He's confident. He knows he's good looking. He knows he can sing well. He knows he's a prodigy. People have been telling him this for the past seven years, and I can only assume being in the media spot light for just as long would do wonders to one's self-confidence.
When he was younger, his self-confidence was perhaps more along the lines of arrogance. During his first trial with Phoenix Wright, he oozed confidence, he spoke with arrogance, and it's really no wonder that Wright found him as annoying as he did. Of course, he's mellowed out since then. He's had seven years of experiences to humble him and to find a reality check. That doesn't mean he's not confident, and that that confidence can sometimes look like arrogance.
That's not to say that Klavier isn't a diva because I'm here to tell you that he is. Although he's not easy to anger, he is not immune to such emotions. When a performance goes horribly, horribly awry and his guitar catches on fire while he's playing it, he certainly pulls out all the stops.
(You can click here to watch the duet Klavier performs with Lamiroir when his guitar catches on fire. Klavier freaks the fuck out and tries to put out his burning guitar on stage while Lamiroir continues to sing as if nothing happened. It's hilarious.)
After the incident, Klavier throws a full scale diva fit. He bursts into the dressing room and, upon seeing Apollo, accuses him of wanting to harm him, despite knowing Apollo was sitting innocently in the audience. Then he goes on to threaten to fire whoever was responsible for the incident before wailing that the song is ruined forever and now he can never play it ever again.
As it turns out, Klavier's day was a lot worst than just a burned guitar. His motorcycle wouldn't start, he lost his key ring causing him to have to break the lock to his guitar case, Daryan missed a singing cue and, to top it all off, there was a murder backstage. If this proves nothing else, it shows that it takes a lot to truly make Klavier angry, flustered or upset. It also shows that, once he has gotten to that point, it's best to just step back and let him be because there is no stopping him.
But there are some traits that are not linked to Rock Star Klavier or Prosecutor Gavin. And the biggest of those traits is, perhaps, resilience. And though being both a rock star and a prosecutor full time for the past seven years is a illustrative of being resilient in and of itself, there is something more that encapsulates that trait.
Klavier's older brother, Kristoph Gavin, was arrested on the charges of murder, for killing a man no one knew, for a motive no one could figure out. One might that that would be enough to turn your world around but wait, there's more.
Three months after his brother is arrested, Klavier's best friend and band mate, Daryan Crescend is arrested for killing an Interpol agent as well as smuggling a dangerous and illegal object into the states. But wait, there's more.
Three months after that, Kristoph is brought to trial once more. This time, Kristoph's sentence is worsened, as it is found out that it was Kristoph who had the forgery made in Klavier's first case, not Phoenix Wright. Worried that word might get out, Kristoph planted a failsafe to the forger and, seven years later, it activates and the forger ends up poisoned to death. But wait. There's more.
One year after that, Klavier's mentor, Constance Courte, is murdered by the department head of the defense attorney program in the law school where Klavier once went.
And yet... Klavier still, somehow, finds a way to smile. Even after everything he's been through, even after his older brother, his best friend and his mentor have gone from his life, he can movie on. He continues to prosecute, he continues to fight for the truth, and he continues to sing and play guitar. He is resilient, he is tough and he continues on.
Finally, to wrap this up, I'm going to debunk an in-canon misconception about Klavier Gavin. Everyone likes to mention how "cool" they think Klavier is -- after all, he's a rock star, he's a prodigy, he's focused on finding the truth, he sings, he plays guitar. Klavier Gavin is so cool.
And yes, all of these things are true and most of it is a part of his charm. But Klavier Gavin is mostly a big, giant dork.
First of all, because his band, his platinum, award-winning band, is about the law. They legitimately have song titles like "My Boyfriend is the Prosecution's Witness". Also because he, somehow, hijacked the sound system in the courtroom and programmed it to play their most recent hit single, "Guilty Love" while he is prosecuting. It's not background music that comes out of nowhere -- characters have commented on hearing the song being played in court.
Not to mention the amount of times he plays air guitar.
He also makes references to pop songs every time the opportunity presents itself. After all, one of his most iconic catchphrases, "Achtung, baby!" is a U2 reference, although he has also quoted Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin. While in court, mind you.
He also colors the German language into his everyday vocabulary. He substitutes “ja” for “yes”, “nein” for “no”, and addresses everyone as either “Herr”, instead of Mr., or “Fräulein” instead of Ms., and uses “Ach!” as a substitute noise for frustration, similar to “Ugh!”
Not to mention his inability to remember names. This is more prominent in his first case with Apollo than any of the others, but after two days of being in court and debating the fate of the defendant, he can't even remember the defendant's name. He gets around this by giving people nicknames -- Apollo is "Herr Forehead", Wesley Stickler is "panties guy" (which I assure you makes sense in context), and every girl he meets is simply "Fräulein". Even when someone's name has just been mentioned, he can't seem to remember what it is.
And, finally, the most dorky thing he has ever done, is just after he bumps into Apollo and new-new-attorney Athena looking for clue and information for a case -- information that Klavier has. He tells them that he is more than willing to give them the information, so long as they use it to find the truth. He has only one condition...
...they have to help him put on a mock trial of a mock trial.
What a loser.
This doesn't mean that Klavier doesn't know how to be serious, because he honestly truly does. But he knows that there's a time to be dorky and a time to be serious. A time to be Rock Star Klavier and a time to be Prosecutor Gavin. He might have many different sides to him, but if you put all of the pieces together, you get someone who's not a bad guy, especially for someone who is supposed to be the Big Bad of the game.
Suitability:
Aside from the, frankly ridiculous, notion that Klavier can hold down a double career as a full time rock star and a full time prosecutor, at the age of seventeen, with no problems whatsoever? Nothing. His status as a "genius prodigy" is entirely within the realm of human intelligence. And while his fans might consider him a God of Rock, Klavier's just a regular human being.
The Ace Attorney games are, in its most basic form, a murder mystery game. The game play is split up into two different types-- investigations and trials. Or: the finding puzzle pieces bit and the putting the puzzle together bit.RP Samples:
In the game, Klavier tends to... leave the investigations to Detective Ema Skye. This is mostly because Ema does not like Klavier and, as such, I think he avoids trying to tick her off, lest she not do her job properly and, in turn, prevent him from doing his job properly. However, upon arriving in snowblind, Klavier will have to do all of the clue finding and investigations on his own, which will be a welcome change from his canon.
And, if for whatever reason, Klavier does skimp on the clue findings in game, he will definitely be able to help with the putting pieces together bit. After all, he has been heralded as a genius -- putting seemingly unrelated clues together in order to form a bigger picture is exactly what he does as a prosecutor. It won't be hard at all for Klavier to turn his mental prowess to the situation at hand, and to work together with anyone willing to collaborate in order to figure out what's happened.
As for the isolationist bit -- well, that's something I'd love to play with. Klavier has always been surrounded by people: by his brother, by his band mates, and by the media for the past seven years. And though things have been hard for him lately -- his brother and best friend have both been arrested for murder, his band disbanded -- I'd really love to play out and see how center of attention and media spotlight Klavier Gavin deals with being truly alone and isolated.
As far as samples go, I'm going to link you to this. It's just a bakerstreet link, and it's got 5 comments from me instead of the 10 required, but it should give you an idea of how I tag with someone, if nothing else.Network
[ Klavier's fingers fumble over the buttons of the tablet as he pulls it out of his jacket -- accidentally starting the feed before he'd intended. Enjoy looking at the dark grey color that is snow after dark, as well as the soft sounds of Germanic cussing.Log
Finally, Klavier brings the tablet up and around to face him. His back is up against the outside of a house and his hood is pulled over his head. There's a smile on his face -- the kind of smile that his fans go crazy for. He blinks and his eyebrows briefly draw together when he sees the feed has started without him, but that's all the reaction he gives before he pushes on.
His situation is obvious. It's after 8PM. He's outside. He's likely to die from hypothermia before the sun rises. His situation is bleak. Life is terrible. But he doesn't speak of his own misfortunes. Instead, what he says is, ] We are all from different places, ja? [ He waves a hand. ] Different countries, different worlds...
Where I come from, I was in a band. [ Was. Past tense. ] I have been thinking. If we are all from some place different than everyone else, the music must be different too, ja?
[ Klavier leans forward, towards the camera, his eyes bright and eager despite his bleak situation. He might be dying but the idea of finding new songs with new lyrics is exciting to him. ] I propose an exchange. For every song from your world you tell me about, I'll tell you about one of mine. I'll even sing, if you like.
[ There are worse ways to die. ]
--This isn't the house he was in before.
Klavier blinks hard, in case this is an illusion. He squeezes his eyes shut before opening them quickly, as though the faster he opens his eyes, the less time the lies have to scurry around a corner and hide from his gaze. But it's of no use, the layout of this house is entirely different than the one he was literally just in.
His house, the one he'd been in, had the kitchen on the left instead of the right. It had a narrow staircase leading to a second floor, upon which there were three rooms, a bathroom and a closet. This new house has no second story, it has all its rooms on the main floor. But the halls in this house, its hallways are wide and open -- there is space to move around, while the house he'd been in had narrow hallways, hallways that seemed to taper and diminish and enclose on you as you walked through them until there was no room left at all, until the house had you in its grip, squeezing and pressing and pulling on you for all your worth.
The walls in this house are sturdy. They don't buckle and move and flow with the harsh, unyielding winds outside. This house is a reprieve from the elements outside, not an extension of the wiles of nature.
There's a stillness to this house, a quietness that puts him on edge. Klavier strains his ears, trying to listen for footsteps. Footsteps that could only belong to Daryan. Footsteps that could only belong to his brother. Or someone associated with his brother. Or someone acting in his brother's stead. After all, Klavier was the one who put Kristoph in jail, Klavier was the one who sentenced his brother to death. Kristoph had gotten revenge on everyone else related to the Enigmar case. Klavier was the only one left --
(After all, it's not paranoia if you're right. He has proof.)
-- His train of thought ends as he violently shivers. All at once, he realizes he's shaking. All at once, he realizes he's freezing. He shuffles over and collapses in front of the fire place, and attempts at making a fire with numb and shaking fingers.
It isn't hard to put together what happened from there. He's heard of what happens if you stay in one place too long, and he knows better. He'd only been in the same for a couple days -- he hadn't heard of cabin fever setting in this quickly. But apparently he's a special case.
(He always is.)
It's only after feeling has returned to his fingers that Klavier realizes he might not be alone in this house ("Manners, Klavier," Kristoph whispers in his mind), and he whips his head around to find... no one. The living room is empty.
"Hallo!" He calls into the house. He doesn't know if someone was once again kind enough to open the door for him as he stumbled about in the snow, or if he got lucky enough and found an unlocked door before 8PM hit. "Is anyone there? Entschuldigung, I did not mean to barge in!"

CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Klavier Gavin
Age: 24
Canon: Ace Attorney
Canon Point: Post-Apollo Justice
Character Information:
Klavier Gavin on the Ace Attorney Wikia.
Klavier Gavin on Court Records.
Personality:
Klavier has been lauded as genius and a prodigy, known as a "true thoroughbred of prosecutor's office".
